  2. began his career at the court of James I of
  3. Aragon (1212-76) in Majorca. He produced
  4. treatises on theology, mysticism, and
  5. chivalry in Catalan, Latin, and Arabic. His
  6. Ars magna was mechanical device, a kind of
  7. prototype computer, by which all problems
  8. could be solved by manipulating fundamental
  9. Aristotelian categories. He also wrote the
  10. prose romance Blanquerna, in his native
  11. Catalan, the first novel written in a Romance
  12. language. In later life he became a
  13. Franciscan, and died a martyr at Bugia,
  14. Algeria.
